“Elara,” Gillian said.

Elara turned at the sound of her voice. The second she saw Gillian in one piece, she stopped herself from rushing over and just said, “Gillian, you’re okay. That’s all I needed.”
“I’m fine.” Gillian knew this wasn’t the place to catch up. Through the cold metal bars, she saw the parasite still wearing her face.
Its whole body was locked rigid, lying flat on the floor, eyes hollow and blank. The look of it was grotesque. Staring at a face that was almost her own made her skin crawl.
“So this is the one.” Elara stepped aside so she could get a clear view.
Merrick’s face was stone, his eyes pure ice on the cage. “Gillian, you want me to handle this?”
Gillian shook her head. “Elara, is it awake?”
Merrick said, “Awake. Ask what you want. If it won’t talk, we’ve got ways to make it.”
Gillian pulled in a breath and walked up to the cage, her voice cold and steady. “You hit the taint pool last night. Why were there no level 9 parasites with you? And when you used Merrick’s face to pull me out, was eating me all you wanted?”
The parasite’s eyes rolled slowly toward her. Its mouth twitched, trying to twist into a warped smile, but it barely managed a tremor.
Its voice came out hoarse and wrong. “You want to know? You think I’m gonna tell you?”
“You’d better start.” Merrick tapped his wrist terminal, and the chain on the parasite’s right arm lit up. Electricity crackled through it, and the arm burst open, blood and flesh shredding under the current.
He cut the power. “Keep quiet, and I’ll turn it up. You’re level 9. Doesn’t mean you can take this.”
A rasping laugh scraped out of the thing’s throat. “Kill me! Kill me, and you’ll never know!”
Merrick didn’t blink. He fried its other arm until the whole cell reeked of cooked meat. “Then I’ll just put you down.”
The parasite didn’t flinch. It let out another jagged laugh. “You think this scares me? I’ll never
talk!”

Merrick’s eyes went cold, the air around him sharpening. “Guess you’ve gotta see how deep this hole goes before you’ll believe it. If electricity’s not your thing, let’s see what is.” He shot Elara a look.
Elara raised her hand. Her pale blue psionic power drifted out like a curl of smoke and bloomed into ice along what was left of the parasite’s arm.
Frost splintered through the shredded flesh, and the thing screamed. Its arm was being carved apart thread by thread, and the sound that came out of it was pure agony.
Gillian’s gaze stayed locked on it. “Who’s behind you? What’s your objective? You keep quiet, you die here. That’s your only way out.”
The parasite went silent for a beat. Something flickered in its eyes, then disappeared behind the same stubborn defiance. It forced the words out. “I… won’t… tell you. Don’t… waste your
breath.”
“Alright, we’re done being nice.” Elara’s eyes sharpened. She pulled out a vial of Truth Serum glowing cold blue.
“If it won’t talk, we’ll make it.” Her voice was cold as she crouched down and pressed the serum into the parasite.
The effect rolled through it fast. Its sneer went slack, and its body started trembling beyond its control.
Gillian leaned in. “Where’s your main force right now?”
The parasite’s eyes went unfocused, and its voice turned flat and mechanical. “Capital… Planet,”
Everyone in the room went rigid. Merrick’s brow furrowed deeply, a sharp glint flickering in his eyes.
Gillian pushed harder. “How did you get to Capital Planet?”
The parasite’s voice stayed hollow and dead as it spilled it. “We… we finished eating the soldiers from eight legions. Our people… changed faces… and went dormant on Capital Planet.”
Gillian stared at that face and fired one question after another. “Where did the flower beasts come from? What caused the taint contamination?”
