Lily shook her head. “It was Camilla. She said she was worried about you and wanted to see if you were okay. She wouldn’t stop bugging me about it.”

Camilla wrapped her little hands around Gillian’s neck. “Mom, are you gonna get tired of me?”

She didn’t have her legs back yet, but she held on tight.

Gillian shifted her and lifted her into her arms. “Tired of you? I’m glad you were worried about

me.”

She tapped her nose with a finger, and something warm bloomed in her chest.

Lily watched Gillian take Camilla, and a little flicker of jealousy ran through her. “Mom, I’m leaving her with you. Once I get the taint cores cleared, I’ll come back for her.”

Gillian could hear the drop in her voice and was about to smooth a hand over her hair when Merrick stepped out of the room.

The second Lily and Camilla saw him, they both shrank back a little.

Merrick said, “Lily, you did great today. Camilla, you did great too. I’m proud of you both.”

Lily and Camilla just blinked.

Huh? He’s actually praising us?

Lily stared at him like she couldn’t quite process it. “Dad, you don’t hate us?”

Camilla’s eyes darted to his waist. No blade. She let out a tiny breath.

“Of course, I don’t hate you.” Merrick’s voice stayed steady. “You protected your mom. You protected the 9th Legion. You defended this land. You’re some of the best soldiers I have.”

His face, usually so hard, broke into a real smile-the first one they’d ever seen-and Lily and Camilla didn’t know what to do with themselves. Something warm and strange stirred in their chests.

Gillian caught Merrick’s eye, and he gave her a small nod.

“Lily, let me take Camilla in and check her over, okay?” she said.

Lily said, “Yeah, go ahead, Mom. Camilla, you do what Mom says.”

Gillian carried Camilla into the room and pushed her healing psionic power through her without pause. She worked through every wound, hoping it’d make her legs grow back faster.

Lily saw Merrick and Sylas talking and was about to slip out when Merrick stopped her.

“Lily, hang on five more minutes before you go.”

She didn’t get why she had to wait, but she did what he said and stood off to the side, half- listening to them talk about the thing they’d caught.

A moment later, someone came and handed Merrick something. He motioned for Lily to come closer.

She did, and saw what he had-two wrist terminals.

Merrick crouched down and fastened one onto her wrist himself. “Lily, I’m officially naming you captain of the 9th Legion Flora Squad, with the rank of colonel.”

The cold metal clicked against Lily’s skin, and her breath caught.

I have a rank now? A real one from the Legion?

Merrick raised an eyebrow. “What, you don’t want it?”

Lily snapped into a Legion salute so fast she nearly tipped herself over. “Yes, sir.”

Merrick had always had an eye for talent. These flower beasts were something else, and he wasn’t about to waste them. “Go on.”

“Yes, sir.”

Lily ran her fingers over the wrist terminal, something glowing in her chest. She was part of Wasteland City now.

“Dad Sylas, come here,” she whispered.

Sylas crouched down. “What is it, Lily?”

“I’m heading out. I’ll add you on StarChat later, okay?” She shot a quick glance at Merrick, then bolted.

Sylas straightened up and watched her bounce off, a real smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Commander, aren’t you spoiling them a little?”

“Spoiling?” Merrick’s expression softened. “They’re kids. A little spoiling’s fine.”
