“And you?” Freya asked. “You’ve got everything mapped out for Gillian. What about yourself?”

“Me? Once things settle here, I’m heading back to Capital Planet to swallow up territory.”

Elara dodged the question about her own heart completely, and Freya knew better than to push on what she was gonna do about Maddox.

Now that they’d talked it out, Freya’s gut reaction had eased up. Bottom line, Elara was just looking out for Gillian.

“Freya, are you into Lucian?” Elara’s question came out of nowhere, and Freya’s hand flew up and clamped over her mouth.

“Don’t even start. Who’d fall for that stone-faced-”

“Mmph.” Elara’s eyes were laughing.

Adrian stepped out of the medical bay just as Lily came toward him, carrying Camilla. He couldn’t miss that white hair.

“Lily, you brought Camilla here all by yourself?” he asked.

He walked over and saw Camilla was awake. Her whole body was thin and breakable-looking, that pale face tipped up at him with those pink eyes, and it got him right in the chest.

“We came to find Mom,” Lily said. “Camilla wanted to see her.”

Lily had gotten good at keeping herself in check now. She didn’t let killing intent leak out at the 9th Legion beastmen for no reason anymore.

Ruby wasn’t with them because she was off keeping the others in line. Without the two of them holding things down, some of the wilder ones still couldn’t control themselves. Plus there were still over eighty S-class taint cores to clear, and they planned to blast through them all at once.

Adrian crouched down to their level, and his voice went softer without him even trying. “But Mrs. Cole’s still patching herself up. Why don’t you two rest for a bit too?”

“Okay,” Lily said, and she smiled and carried Camilla toward the medical bay.

Adrian had a mountain of crap to deal with after the battle, so he got up and left.

The second he was gone, Lily turned right back around with Camilla in her arms, figured out which way to go, and headed straight for Merrick’s room.

Camilla’s little hands hooked around Lily’s neck, and her voice came out shaky. “Lily, are we really going to see Mom?”

Lily said, “You don’t want to? I’ll leave you with her and go meet Ruby to clear the taint cores.”

Camilla nodded so hard her whole body shook. “I do. I want Mom.”

They got to Gillian’s door and spotted Sylas standing at the corner of the hallway.

“Dad Sylas, what are you doing here?” Lily’s whole face lit up when she saw him. She was just glad he wasn’t hurt.

Sylas’ face, usually so closed off and gray, cracked into something gentler when he looked at her.

Then his eyes dropped to Camilla, and the sight of her missing legs hit him. He crouched down, and a flicker of pain crossed his face. “Lily, where are Camilla’s legs?”

Sylas never forgot anyone. All three hundred flower beasts, he knew every single name and had never gotten one wrong.

Lily replied, “Dad Sylas, the bugs ate them when she was protecting Mom. But it’s okay. They’ll grow back soon.”

That only made his chest tighten more. “You two are good kids. Both of you.”

Camilla broke into this surprised, glowing smile. Sylas had only ever watched her from far away and had never talked to her directly, but he still knew exactly who she was.

She leaned in close to Lily’s ear and whispered, “Lily, there are three of us camellias, and he still knows my name.”

Sylas caught every word and his smile went even gentler. Around the flower beasts, whose hearts were so clean, he didn’t feel like that hollow, dead-quiet thing he usually was.

“How could I not? You three camellias are all different colors. Camilla, you’re the sweet pink one. Easy.”
