Elara wasn’t joking around anymore. Tristan was a Glamour Fox, already at Level 7, and his taking over the Lawson family was basically a done deal.
A Glamour Fox that made it to level 9 or 10 was a one-fox fleet. Gillian’s kids were gonna need that kind of muscle. She’d meant to ask him herself to protect Gillian, but she was afraid Merrick would find a way to quietly off him in the middle of the night.
“Elara, you really don’t ask for much, huh?” Tristan’s face went a little cold.
“You don’t like the terms? Walk out and find some female to bond with. I don’t have to risk anything that way.”
Truth was, Elara wasn’t exactly thrilled to hand over the Five-Colored Cicada’s blood. The stuff was a miracle cure. People couldn’t even put a price on a vial this small.
“Wait, Elara. That’s not what I meant.” Tristan thought about.it for a second, then nodded.
Soon as she saw him give in, Elara pulled a contract up on her wrist terminal. “Here. Read it. Sign, and we start.”
Tristan stared at the screen, his fox ears twitching, and put on a hurt face. “Didn’t know you’d cover your ass with me too.”
Elara did not flinch. “Boy, you could find a wife and forget I exist. It’s not that crazy. Sign.”
Tristan’d said yes, so he wasn’t gonna back out.
He signed, and when he looked up again, Elara had a metal case on the table and was digging through it. She pulled out a single vial, tapped the glass, and the liquid inside swirled into a coil of color.
“Lucky you. There’s one dose of Five-Colored Cicada Antidote left. Enough to fix you.” She fed it into his vein.
Tristan’s eyelids flickered as the serum burned its way through him, and for a second a pale white cicada seemed to pulse against his chest.
“Elara, you think I’m just that bad?”
“Where’s that coming from?” Elara pulled her hand back.
But Tristan’d already spaced out and didn’t answer. The flush slowly faded from his face.

“Elara, I can feel the heat powder clearing out of my primal core.” He barely got the words out before he slumped onto the bed. The serum was dragging him under.
“Get some rest. Once the antidote does its thing, you’ll be fine.”
Elara put the metal case away. She’d swiped it from Maddox’s wrist terminal. The little case was packed with serums worth more than anyone could buy on the open market.
If Maddox had used any of them that day, they never would’ve taken him down. His mistake was writing off the Sterling family. He lost. His own fault.
Her fingers brushed an empty glass vial. The label read, “Paralysis Serum.”
That was what brought down the thing pretending to be Gillian. It had been all over Merrick one second, completely limp the next, when the needle went in. The thing was still lying there stiff as a board in its cell.
Elara shut the case and winced. Two doses gone. That hurt.
She was packing up to leave when Freya stopped her. “Elara, I need to talk to you.”
Elara nodded and followed her out.
They found a quiet spot, and Freya turned to her. “When did you go back to the research base and get the mithril chain?”
“When Gillian was nine,” Elara said. “I came back once. The Cryolotus had a part that needed fixing, and Maddox brought me to find a replacement. I tracked down word of Gillian while I was there. When we passed through Goldspine City, I got a chance and took hair samples from her and Grandma. Ran the DNA myself.”
She’d always known she was living in Freya’s spot, but Gillian she’d been holding in her heart as a sister all those years, had turned real. She couldn’t just flip a switch on that.
Freya frowned. “Then why give the mithril chain to Tristan? You know how bad things got between them. They were trying to kill each other.”
“Freya, do you know Merrick got sent here from Capital Planet for murder? He’s got enemies there. Lots of them. The kind that keep coming.”
Elara had her reasons. Gillian hitching herself to Merrick meant hitching herself to a target, and Elara had spent six years watching his back. It hadn’t been easy.
Elara continued, “Tristan just hasn’t hit his peak yet. The Glamour Fox the Lawson family produced a hundred years ago damn near stunned half of Capital Planet. If he hadn’t died
