The second Adrian was gone, Elara’s expression flipped. She’d caught the way he’d smiled at Freya, all warm and creased, and the gossip spark lit up in her cold, beautiful eyes.
“Freya, does Adrian have a thing for you?”
Freya’s eyes went wide.
What? Where did that even come from?
She knew she wasn’t bad-looking, but the Sovereign Guard weren’t the type to lose their heads over a pretty face.
“Elara, I barely know the guy,” Freya said. “What are you talking about?”
She moved beside Tristan and took in the unhealthy flush spreading across his face. “And what the hell happened to him?”
If Lucian saw his brother like this, he’d be worried. I wonder how he’s holding up.
Elara watched Freya staring at Tristan like she was looking through him at someone else. That wasn’t like her. Freya didn’t hover.
A cold jolt went through Elara.
Is she into Lucian? Using the little fox to think about the other one?
“Adrian’s sharp,” Elara said. “He used heat powder to kill those things. So Tristan and Gillian both got dosed. One of them has a mate to fix it. The other got his face caved in by Commander Cole.”
“Commander Cole hit him?” Freya asked. “Why?”
“Because he tried to bond with Gillian.”
“Oh.” Freya nodded, her tone flat. “Then he had it coming.”
She looked at Tristan with new understanding, taking in the bruises. Merrick had not held back. He’d been genuinely furious.
But this guy’s got more nerve than his brother. He actually confessed right to Commander Cole’s face.
Elara watched Tristan keep playing dead and decided she was done waiting. She patted his

cheek with a light slap. “You planning to live? Dragging this out isn’t gonna work. Your primal core’s about to blow, boy.”
Freya realized Tristan had been awake the whole time and snapped her mouth shut.
I was just talking about him right in front of him. Fantastic. That’s not awkward at all.
Tristan opened his eyes. The heat powder had carved him out, but he pushed himself upright anyway. “I’m not bonding with someone I don’t want.”
He was in bad shape, but he was still holding that line.
“Then you want to bond with Gillian?” Elara settled into a chair, resting her cheek on her fingers. “You already took your shot.” She nodded at the bruise on his face. “Try again, and you won’t walk away from it.”
“Elara, please.” Tristan’s voice came out rough. “Help me.”
He looked so docile right then, all his sharp edges softened, completely harmless.
Freya had never seen him fold this fast.
When did he fall for Gillian? A boy this stubborn and wild, and he goes and picks her? She’s gonna have nothing but trouble coming her way.
“Honestly, my Gillian’s not as perfect as you think.” Elara held out her palm. “You can give the silver chain back. Just because the bond didn’t happen doesn’t mean we have to be enemies.”
Tristan spread his empty hands. “Lost it in the fight with Merrick.”
Elara snorted. She wasn’t about to call him out on it. “The Lawson family has more than one son. Lucian’s available.”
Tristan didn’t say a word.
“You know Freya’s the Sterling family’s eldest,” Elara went on. “She’s the right one to honor the engagement. Tristan, it’s not that I didn’t want to help. You didn’t take your shot.”
Freya’s gaze settled on Elara.
The silver chain was something she’d only heard mentioned in passing as a kid. The research base had been too dangerous, and she’d never had time to grab it. Then twenty years of memory had been wiped clean. Elara bringing it up now caught her off guard.
She went back to the research base alone. She actually found it.

Freya filed that away to ask about later.
And Lucian? That can wait. He might not even want me.
