The roots hadn’t even finished pulling in the gray concentrate when some of it splashed onto Gillian’s skin.

Gillian looked down and went still. Her bio-armor had dissolved on contact, and the spot reeked of burnt chemicals.

She shoved a pulse of psionic power at the two little ones in her belly, hoping they’d soak up the spill. The babies stirred for a second, fussed, and then went quiet again without taking anything in.

Gillian stared at her leg. No sting, no wound. She pushed the torn fabric of her pants out of the

way

and found the skin smooth and untouched. The gray smear was gone.

Where did it go?

“I can absorb the purge concentrate now?” She barely breathed the words, but it was enough to jolt Ruby awake behind her.

A small red blossom shot out and smacked the round little flower beast who’d made the mess. “What’s wrong with you? You can’t even eat without spilling?” Ruby snapped.

“Ruby, I’ll be careful next time, I swear.” The flower beast’s eyes filled up. “Mom, I didn’t mean to waste it. Please don’t be mad at me.”

Ruby hauled her over to apologize. “Mom, Peony didn’t do it on purpose. She’s almost at level 8. She probably just got too eager.”

“Ruby, I’m fine,” Gillian said. “But why can I absorb the purge?” The question came out before she could stop it, and she had a gut feeling Ruby might actually have the answer.

Ruby had been bracing for Gillian to scold Peony Sterling for being greedy and careless. That was all this was.

She nudged Peony aside and pulled out the nectar she’d been saving. “Mom, you don’t like it? If you can take the purge like we do, you’ll get strong. Strong enough to protect whoever you

want.”

Gillian looked at the half cup of cloudy liquid.

So it was the nectar? Protect whoever I want. Of course, I want that.

But what kind of gift changes your whole body so you can absorb the purge?

She took the cup and met Ruby’s eyes. “Ruby, where’s this nectar coming from?”

Ruby reached out a petal and pulled a drop of nectar from Peach Sterling, who’d just eaten her fill and was resting nearby. She held it up so Gillian could see.

“Mom, we take it from the flower beasts.”

Gillian watched it being drawn from the very center of Peach’s core. That was no different from drawing blood straight from the heart.

“This comes from inside you?” Her chest tightened. “Does it hurt?”

“Mom, it’s just our essence. A little bit doesn’t hurt. It comes right back.” Peach pulled her roots free, swapped with the flower beast waiting behind her, and moved off to rest like it was nothing at all.

“Ruby, did you give yours too?” Gillian hadn’t realized how precious it was. She couldn’t place the taste because it wasn’t just one flower. It was all of them. Every flower beast here had given something.

Ruby said, “Mom, it really doesn’t hurt. And we’d never give it to anyone but you.”

Each of them only made a single drop every time they leveled up.

Ruby didn’t even finish before the other flower beasts saw the guilt on Gillian’s face and started talking over each other.

“Mom, it’s nothing. They only took a few drops from me. It grows back so fast.”

“Yeah, Mom, it doesn’t hurt. You can’t cry, okay?”

“If you cry, Lily’s gonna be so upset when she gets back. She told us not to make you sad.”

Ruby tapped her roots, and every flower beast shut their mouths at once.

“Mom, you’ve been making the purge for us nonstop, day and night. This is our gift back to you,” she said, her voice warm and full.

Gillian remembered back when all she could give the two babies was a thin wisp of mist. Now her body had been changed by the flower beasts’ nectar, her whole constitution rebuilt. She could absorb a full drop of concentrate, and she didn’t know whether to be thrilled or terrified.

Gillian smiled, “I love the gift. Ruby, all of you-thank you.”
