Gillian had put away at least fifteen cups of nectar today, maybe twenty. The taint, a full level below the purge, couldn’t touch her anymore.
She’d never expected the kids to pay her back like this. The gift was more than she could wrap her mind around.
“Ruby, you wanna see a real downpour?” If the taint couldn’t burn her, she could double her output. She could refine lying down, crouching, and standing waist-deep in the pool.
“A downpour?” That sounded exactly like something the 9th Legion would do. Ruby lit up and immediately nudged Gillian to finish the last of the nectar. No point letting a storm wash it
away.
Gillian knew how precious every drop was. She drained the cup and handed it back. “Ruby, that’s enough nectar. My body can handle it now.”
Even taking just a little of that essence had to take a toll on the flower beasts.
Her white bio-armor was already wrecked, but she didn’t bother stripping it. White psionic power burst from her palms and poured out of her whole body.
They’d given her a gift, and she meant to return it.
The flower beasts groaned inwardly. If they’d known that unlocking Gillian’s psionic power at full force would turn that soft drizzle into a pounding storm, they’d have poured the nectar down her throat the very first day. This purge concentrate rain was unreal!
And Gillian, standing in the middle of it, realized something else. Even when she wasn’t trying, her body was soaking it in on its own.
What’s this going to do to me?
The purge concentrate slipped into her body and disappeared, like it was never there. Just like the nectar. No residue on her skin, no strange feeling. Nothing.
Merrick had torn through every inch of the area at the coordinates Freya sent and hadn’t found a trace of the Griffin Warship.
He sent, “Gillian, I’ve got nothing at the Naiad River. No sign of them,” His eyes stayed on the
water.

Lily bounced up behind him, her white roots still clumped with dark mud.
“Lily, all done digging?” he asked.

“Yeah. Dad, you sure the spot’s right?” She pulled up the coordinates on her wrist terminal. “We dug for miles in every direction and didn’t find a thing. The dirt’s packed tight. Doesn’t look like anything’s been disturbed. There’s no way a warship that size is under there.”
Merrick had already gone through the White Griffin’s scans. She wasn’t wrong. Nothing that big was hiding under that ground.
But these are the exact coordinates Freya sent. Why would she lie?
“The only thing out here big enough to swallow a warship is that river.” Lily stared at the flat water with a sour look. Anyone who’d spent the whole afternoon digging holes and come up empty was gonna be annoyed.
She was right. Only the river.
By the afternoon of the 28th, Merrick pulled himself out of the Naiad River, soaked and dripping, and hauled himself onto the bank.
They’d swum the channel for hours and scrambled out just before their bio-armor failed.
Twenty flower beasts climbed up behind him, each one with roots speared through several huge, thrashing fish. Lily and the stronger ones spat out river water and shook the drops off their petals.
The Naiad River had a deep silt bed, and it looked bottomless from above, but it wasn’t as deep as it seemed.
The only things living down there were nests of aggressive fish, some up to level 8. The flower beasts had cleaned them out, but aside from taint-contaminated fish, there was nothing in that river. No scale parasites. Not a trace.
“Wrong. It’s all wrong.” Merrick understood now. They’d been searching the wrong place. No one could’ve wiped the evidence this clean.
There was only one answer. They’d been played. The coordinates Freya sent were fake. The distress call was fake.
Why did she lie?
“Dad, where are we going now?” Lily’s face was pulled tight.
