Gillian didn’t stop. She pushed her healing into all four of them until her psionic power was burned down to nothing and her legs nearly gave out.

Merrick caught her from behind and steered her clear of the spent blackstone scattered across the floor.

“Merrick, I’m okay. Just drained.” Gillian was soaked in sweat and running on empty.

Merrick looked at her and then at the four bodies on the beds and had to fight the urge to kick every last one of them out.

He sat her down on the couch instead. “They’re stable. You can stop now,” he said.

“I’m stopping.” Her chest went soft. She took the blackstone he pressed into her hands and let her psionic power slowly start to rebuild.

Lily tucked herself in beside Gillian and didn’t move. She wasn’t even looking at Sylas anymore. Gillian’s face was worse than his.

“Mom, you okay? You look terrible,” Lily said.

“Lily, I’m fine. Give me a minute.” Gillian managed a small smile for her and glanced at the four on the beds, all stable, then closed her eyes and focused on absorbing the blackstone.

“Lily, watch your mom,” Merrick said.

Lily nodded without a word and sat down beside Gillian like a small, silent guard.

Merrick turned to the four of them. “You’re all awake. Now let’s go over what happened. What exactly did you run into out there?” he asked.

Every gaze in the room swung toward them.

Elara pushed herself upright, but her eyes went straight to the figure curled on the couch. Gillian’s face was drained white, and the sight of it stung.

If Gillian hadn’t poured everything she had into them, all four of them would be dead. The ache surged up and turned into fury.

“Commander, I’ll start,” Elara said, her voice tight.

Merrick nodded. Gillian kept her eyes shut, but she was listening.

“The Griffin Warship set down at the Naiad River. Blue Phoenix and the Cryolotus both scanned the area. Everything read normal.” Elara looked at Freya, who nodded.

Elara’s voice trembled as she went on, “The three of us got off the ship. Captain Reed stayed on board to cover us. We followed the trajectory Blue Phoenix had marked, tracking any sign of the parasite nest. Every path led straight to the river.”

She lifted her arm out of habit, but the Cryolotus Wrist Terminal was gone from her wrist, and all the data with it.

She dropped her hand and picked up the thread from memory. “The Naiad River was dark. Too dark. I pulled the records from the Cryolotus and compared them. Nothing flagged.”

Two scans, both clean. That was exactly what had felt so wrong. A river crawling with scale parasites shouldn’t have read clean.

“We dropped over a hundred probes into the water. Nothing but static. The taint levels down there were off the charts.” She pressed her lips together. “We had nothing. So Sylas decided to go in and check the riverbed himself.”

Every eye turned to Sylas.
