Chapter 283 Thank You for Saving My Life
“Commander, you called for us? What’s the mission?” Number Five asked.
“You two were my brother’s Shadow Guards?” Merrick’s voice came out flat.

Number Five and Number Six dropped to one knee immediately. “We were free men the moment we got you to the wasteland. These six years, we’ve followed you because we wanted
They stayed down, waiting, and the silence stretched, nerves fraying with every second that passed.
They’d been Shadow Guards once, but their old master had made it clear—the last mission was to keep Merrick safe. After that, they were free. Having it all dragged into the open now left them uneasy.
Merrick stared at the two of them and felt his memories lurch back. Six years ago, sentenced to Wasteland City, the transport ship meant to deliver him had malfunctioned on landing and gone up in flames.
Everyone on board had died. He’d been the only one to walk away.
If Maddox is telling the truth, Number Five and Number Six pulled me out of that wreck.
He was quiet for a long moment, then spoke, “Thank you for saving my life.”
His voice was even, but Gillian caught the tangled edge underneath it.
Number Five went rigid and dropped his head lower. The scar on his neck was more visible now, a line that ran all the way down his back.
He’d once said it came from a fight. Now it looked more like a wound from the explosion, earned dragging Merrick from the flames before they’d dumped him at George’s and disappeared.
When Number Six saw Number Five practically pressing his forehead into the floor, he decided it was better to confess now and hope for forgiveness later. If they kept hiding it, Merrick might actually be hurt by it.
“Commander, saving you was the best thing we ever did,” he said.
Number Five’s head snapped up.

He actually admitted it?

He risked a glance at the man on the metal bed. Maddox looked exactly the same as he had six years ago-cold, regal, untouchable. Right now, he was just rubbing his legs and paying them no attention at all.
Number Five exhaled and added, “Yeah. Commander, we’re lucky it was us who got sent to you.”
Merrick looked at the two soldiers who’d fought beside him through everything, and for the first time, he bent. “If you want to go back to him, I won’t stop you.”
But his knuckles were white, and it wasn’t hard to see what it cost him.
Number Five and Number Six traded a glance. Six years at Merrick’s back, through storms and bloodshed, living a life nothing like that on Capital Planet. They’d found real friendship here. They’d found something worth guarding.
They spoke at the same time, like they shared a single thought, “We’re staying with you, Commander. We’ll lead the 9th Legion and protect this land. We’re not going anywhere.”
A small smile tugged at the corner of Merrick’s mouth.
Before he could answer, a blur shot toward him, and a leg slammed into his side with brutal force. The kick swept across his shoulder with a vicious whistle. Whoever threw it wasn’t holding back. It was meant to take him off his feet.
Merrick twisted and dodged, and the strike punched a hole through the metal floor instead.
Maddox didn’t let up, and the next wave of blows came like a storm, fists and kicks blurring together as the two of them tore into each other. Everyone watching felt their pulse kick up just from the sound of it.
The fight was getting more savage by the second, and it felt like the whole room was about to come crashing down.
Gillian edged over to Elara. “Can Merrick actually beat him?” she asked.
“Don’t worry. Neither of them’s dying.” If the misunderstanding hadn’t been cleared, Elara might’ve been less sure. But now? They’d hurt each other, but they wouldn’t kill each other.
