“Take it outside. The harder you fight, the better. Merrick, don’t kill him-he is your brother.” Gillian’s voice was full of dry amusement.

Maddox’s gaze cut toward her. His brow furrowed, and there was an edge to his voice. “You think I can’t beat Merrick?” he demanded.

Gillian smiled, unhurried, “Not saying that. Just saying he shouldn’t beat an old man too badly.”

She met his stare without flinching.

Maddox’s mouth twitched.

These Sterling sisters are mean. She called me an old man?

And she’s completely unbothered. What exactly is she holding?

“You’re distracted.” Merrick’s fist drove into his stomach mid-fight. “Gillian, don’t worry. I’ll go easy on the old man.”

He shot her a wink and shot out the door like a bolt.

Maddox followed, murder in his eyes.

Old man?

In seconds, both of them were gone from the medical bay, leaving Gillian and the others standing there.

Seconds later, the whole base shook. A black griffin and a jade griffin slammed into each other on the open ground, and the shockwave rattled the taint pool towers. Roars tore through the air, half lion, half eagle.

“They’re really going at it,” Elara said. She grabbed Gillian’s arm and hauled her outside. “Hurry up!”

Gillian wasn’t sure what Elara was feeling right now. Was she actually excited?

When they got outside, the two griffins were locked head-to-head, and the impact was shaking the high towers loose.

“Stop! You’re going to tear the base apart!” Gillian had dropped her earlier detachment and looked ready to throw herself between them.

Merrick’s roar cut across the field. “He watched my mother die and didn’t lift a hand! He threw away everything the Cole family gave him! Out here at the taint’s source, I can kill him and no one will ever know!”

Maddox’s voice was pure fury. “You idiot! This is exactly why they sent you to Wasteland City! You’re never getting back to Capital Planet like this!”

Their voices carried across the entire base, and in a hidden room, someone watched the feed and smiled coldly.

“These Griffinkin are a joke. Tearing each other apart.” A man with narrow, sharp eyes sat in a wide metal chair and watched the distant screen.

The feed was zoomed in, the two fighters clearly visible. They were going at each other like they both meant to finish it.

He caught a solid hit and let out a soft, dismissive snort, like the whole thing was beneath him.

“Never thought I’d see Maddox that wrecked. That’s satisfying.”

Thatcher Phelan tilted his chin and toyed with a metal block in his palm.

The metal block rested in his hand like it was something precious, giving off a warm, smooth glow. The cool metal had long since soaked up his body heat from all that handling.

He glanced down at it, and something almost nostalgic flickered across his face. “Could this be one of the rejects from the old lab?” he murmured, his voice carrying a mix of anticipation and doubt.

His aide hurried to answer. “Sir, we can’t confirm that yet. All the data from that period was destroyed. Restoration will take more time.”

Thatcher’s eyes cut toward the male struggling with Blue Phoenix. “You’ve had it for two days and it still isn’t synced?” he said.
