Thatcher was throwing the morning’s discovery of the Griffin Warship straight in his face.

Eliot Harrison stared at him. “Thatcher, are you blaming me?” he asked.

Thatcher shot back, “If your people hadn’t let them slip, we’d have our own inside their ranks. right now. You’ve got no room to talk.”

Eliot laughed, genuinely caught off guard by the reversal. “You’re the one who said these people were nothing. You threw the young ones into a frontal assault. Our losses are on you, not me. And you want to know why I couldn’t watch a few prisoners? Because most of my people are dead. Who exactly was I supposed to post?”

His sharp features twisted Merrick’s handsome face into something cruel. “And what about the eighty-plus kin who went dormant underground? Have you figured out how you’re going to answer for them yet?”

A flicker of guilt crossed Thatcher’s eyes. He’d miscalculated. He hadn’t thought the other side could withstand that assault.

But if I admit fault, he’ll hang the entire failure on me.

His narrow eyes gleamed. “You think I wanted that? I was trying to take back the flower beasts and the purge concentrate. And now you’re pointing fingers at me? Fine. If I’m so useless, I’ll step aside. Everything here is yours.”

Eliot watched him coldly. Thatcher was from the earlier wave, already dug deep into Capital Planet.

And now he’s threatening to walk away?

We helped him find his precious Blue Phoenix, and now he’s spitting in our faces.

Eliot stayed silent, and Thatcher, not wanting to burn the bridge completely, eased his tone. “Can’t blame us entirely. Merrick got lucky, pulling those little things back.”

Eliot’s attention snapped back to the screen. The fight had reached its peak.

The taint pools on the high towers had been smashed open by the two griffins, and the crater their battle had carved was filling with black concentrate.

Merrick, younger and outmatched, was driven into the pit and pinned under Maddox’s claws.

The taint contamination exploded outward, a wave of black rolling across the field, forcing even the hidden observers to pull their teams back.

From the retreat distance, the fight was still going, but the taint had swallowed the details. All they could see was Maddox standing on Merrick, refusing to let him rise.

Thatcher and Eliot stopped arguing and watched.

A female in a white cleric’s robe threw herself at Maddox, attacking without care. “Let him go!”

One move, and Maddox swatted her aside.

The submerged Merrick was hauled up, his body already eaten through in multiple places, unconscious.

The female lunged again and dragged him into the taint pool, trying to swim him to the far side.

Maddox didn’t move, just watched like they were fools.

Elara, who’d been frozen nearby, suddenly lunged toward the pool, and Maddox caught her and held her back.

“Let me go! Gillian-Gillian, get out of there! That’s a taint pool, you’ll die! Get out!” Elara screamed.

The two figures in the black water were barely moving now, sinking.

Elara closed her eyes to jump in after them, and Maddox threw her over his shoulder.

“They’re dead. Even if we pull them out, there’s nothing left to save. Merrick’s gone, and we have to move. The 9th Legion will slaughter us.” He carried her off without looking back.

The taint levels on the feed had already hit S-class, and the Legion soldiers couldn’t advance. Chaos swept the field.

“Eliot, you take Merrick’s place.” Thatcher saw the opening. Take over the 9th Legion, and the flower beasts and taint pools were theirs.
