Lily stretched out her root tendrils and wove them into a floating bridge across the pool.
Merrick stepped onto the tendrils, and Lily carried him safely to the center of the pool.
Elara quickly explained how Gillian had been pulled into the portal, her voice heavy with worry. “I can no longer reach Gillian on her wrist terminal. There are two possibilities. She may have been sent to Capital Planet, or she could have arrived in the Central World.”
Merrick shook his head to calm her nerves. “Don’t panic. This marker only sends people one way toward the Central World. Gillian almost certainly ended up on Capital Planet.”
Elara breathed a huge sigh of relief once the Central World possibility was ruled out.
She said, “If she’s on Capital Planet, she will stay safe until we catch up to her.”
Merrick pulled the pear blossom stones out of his wrist terminal storage.
He said, “Each pear blossom stone only carries one person. You take Lily and go after Gillian.”
Merrick pressed the two stones into Elara and Lily’s hands. “Elara, Lily, you two go keep Gillian safe. I still have unfinished business here. I will catch up with you as soon as I finish.”
Elara stared at the glowing stone clutched in her palm and asked in surprise, “Do you have more pear blossom stones?”
Merrick briefly told her about Norris kidnapping Sylas.
“Well then.” Elara nodded firmly.
That was exactly what I planned to do. I have a strong hunch this portal leads to the Stellar Ore Black Hole.
No one knows that place better than I do.
Elara said, “Whether you recover the remaining stones or not, I will bring Gillian back safely.”
She took Lily’s hand. They stepped onto the exact spot where Gillian had stood, and the swirling gray mist vortex appeared once again.
“Dad, I’ll take you ashore.” Lily did not forget Merrick. She flicked her root tendril and flung him sharply back toward the bank.

Merrick took two quick running steps mid-air and landed safely on the shore using the momentum from the tendril.
The vortex swallowed Elara and Lily the very next second, and they vanished completely.
Maddox watched the whole scene with an unchanging cold expression.
When Merrick stood up straight, Maddox’s low voice boomed beside him, thick with irritation.
He said, “You handed those pear blossom stones to a female and a child, counting on them to rescue your mate? Merrick, you owe me a proper explanation.”
His brows drew tight. He strongly disapproved of that decision.
Merrick felt his anger rising, and that was exactly what he wanted. He had been waiting to provoke this reaction.
The two had not held a calm conversation in years.
Every talk always exploded into hostility.
Merrick met Maddox’s sharp stare without backing down, his tone calm and steady. “If I handed the stones to you instead, would you run off again? Would that make everything right?”
Maddox frowned, folding his arms coldly, “What nonsense are you talking about? Why would I run away?”
And why has his attitude changed so suddenly? Instead of hurling insults at me?
He studied Merrick closely, confused by this sudden shift in attitude.
Merrick grinned playfully. “I mean exactly what I said. I’m afraid you will take the chance and flee.”
He is still just as childish after all these years.
Maddox withdrew his cold, scrutinizing gaze. “Enough of this. I have somewhere to be.”
He’s pretty brutal when he beats people up, though-that’s the only thing he takes after me.
Merrick threw his hands out casually. “Am I lying? You spent the past fourteen years running away, you coward. Do you really think you can keep hiding forever?”
Merrick’s gaze sharpened, as if he wanted to carve the words deep into Maddox’s heart.
