“I accept your apology. I hope you uncover the truth soon.” Maddox’s voice held no trace of relief; if anything, it turned even colder. “Now that you know I did not kill Skylar, I suppose I may leave?”

Merrick said, “Of course you may.”

Maddox stated, “Return my Shadow Guard to me. Arrange a warship to send me back to Capital Planet.”

Merrick frowned, trying to hold him back. “But countless crimson hides are still hiding on Capital Planet. Are you still determined to go back? This place is far safer. What if we join forces?”

Maddox replied sharply, “You do not yet have the standing to form an alliance with me.”

He turned and walked away without another glance. The streaks of colorful ore on the ground stretched on like an impassable divide between the two brothers.

Maddox stared ahead into the unknown. His true battlefield had never been here.

Merrick watched his figure fade from sight and slouched his shoulders, unable to hide his

frustration.

He called out, “Aren’t you even curious where Mother is? Do you not care whether she is alive or dead?”

Maddox clenched his fist so hard his knuckles whitened. “I don’t care.”

He vanished among the jagged, oddly colored mineral outcrops without another word.

A short while later, the dirt wall split open.

A male beastman carried a captive into the mine tunnel.

Sylas glanced around the glittering ore cave and knew they had reached their destination.

His whole body was paralyzed, and he had no idea what drug had been injected into his veins.

Sylas demanded, “Who are you? Why have you kidnapped me?”

Norris said coldly, “You do not need to know my name. Dead men have no use for extra information.”

He moved with incredible speed, carrying Sylas nimbly through the ore passages until they reached the pool.

Sylas gritted his teeth against the pain and tried to goad the man into talking.

He snarled, “We shall see who dies first. At the very least, your loathsome parasite kind will be wiped out at the source of the taint.”

Norris said, “I will not spill a single detail for you.”

He spotted fresh footprints along the pool’s edge and panicked. He tossed Sylas down beside the water, then dove into the taint, swimming quickly to the stone slab in the center.

“No way-how could the natives of Outer Planet have found here?” Norris climbed onto the carved jade surface and ran his fingers over the empty sockets.

He roared in rage, “Who took the last pear blossom stone? Who was it?”

Only his own shout echoed through the empty cavern.

Sylas let out a loud laugh. “All your careful planning has come to nothing.”

Norris spun around, his eyes blazing with murderous fury. He snapped, “How dare me?”

Sylas laughed even more wildly. “Why shouldn’t I laugh at you, you filthy bug that only dares to crawl underground?”

The ground beneath Sylas suddenly caved in. White root tendrils wrapped fully around his body, and a giant red flower pulled him down into the soil.

Norris scrambled forward toward the spot, yet all he found was a pitch-black hole.

He shouted angrily, “What monster stole what belongs to me?”

A familiar voice sounded right behind him the next second.

Merrick said, “Norris, where are you running off with Sylas?”

A massive black griffin leaped out from behind the rock and planted one heavy paw firmly on Norris’ back, pinning him to the ground.

“Merrick, why is it you?” Norris shouted.

His body melted into a pool of bloody liquid the moment he sensed the griffin’s aura, slipping
