Sylas’ psionic form was half-exposed. Countless crimson lines snaked across his torso, turning every vein bright, burning red.
He lay unconscious, his face twisted with agony as if he endured unbearable torment.
Gillian crouched down beside him. “So this is what a genetic outburst looks like.”
To have every vein burning nonstop must have been pure torture.
She tried channeling her healing power to treat him. The second her psionic power touched those blazing red blood vessels, violent spasms wracked his whole body.
Sylas let out a hoarse scream of pain. Gillian immediately pulled back her healing power, daring not to push further.
Merrick stared at the inflamed veins and thought of fighting poison with poison.
He said, “Gillian, try using fire. Split your flame into the thinnest possible strands and burn out the toxic buildup in his meridians.”
Gillian shook her head anxiously. “Are you serious, Merrick? My fire is far too fierce. I could incinerate him entirely by mistake.”
Her flame power had only evolved a few days prior.
One slip would cost Sylas his life.
Sylas opened his eyes without anyone noticing. Warm brown light filled his irises, the kind of gentle gaze that made others trust him at once.
He said weakly, “Mrs. Cole, I am willing to take the risk. If this fire can free me from this agony, I will accept death without complaint.”
Gillian still had no confidence in her control. She stood up. “But I don’t believe in myself. Maybe I should practice for a few more days first.”
Sylas smiled sincerely at her, “Mrs. Cole, you underestimate your own skill. I trust you completely.”
His tone stayed calm most of the time, yet genuine joy shone clearly on his face right now.
Sylas continued, “I don’t know what drug he injected into my body. I cannot hold on much

longer. If I leave this arena, I will lose myself entirely to bloodlust.
“I cannot let Ruby and Leila see me turn into a monster. Please, grant my request.”

A single cold tear rolled down Sylas’ cheek. Ruby burst into loud sobs. “Dad Sylas, don’t die. Please stay with us.”
Leila’s lower lip trembled. She grabbed the hem of Gillian’s clothes and whimpered, “Mom, can we keep Dad Sylas alive?”
Gillian forced a steady smile. “Don’t cry. Sylas is going to be fine.”
She had no choice but to try everything she could. Inside the arena, there was still a chance to save him.
Gillian turned toward Freya. “Do you have any cyan spirit stones left? If my fire damages his psionic form, we will need something to stabilize him.”
Freya shook her head. “I don’t have any.” She didn’t take part in the arena parasite cull.
Right then, Ruby and Leila held out their small hands. “This one, Mom?”
They were clutching a handful of cyan spirit stones.
Gillian stared in surprise. “Where did you two get so many?”
A flicker of hope settled in her heart.
Ruby answered proudly, “We got them from killing the bugs.”
The two little girls piled the stones beside Sylas the second they realized they could help.
Sylas closed his eyes tightly and held back fresh tears, touched by the children’s concern.
He said quietly, “Let’s begin, Mrs. Cole. I don’t have much time left.”
“Okay, don’t move,” Gillian said, while sending a quick signal toward Freya.
Freya understood immediately. She wove golden psionic power into a crude operating table and bound Sylas’ limbs firmly with metal restraints so he could not thrash around.
Gillian said, “I’m starting now.”
She split her golden flame into an almost invisible wisp. At the same time, Merrick made a small cut over Sylas’ chest to open the meridian channel.

Merrick nodded. “We’re ready, Gillian.”
Gillian said, “Okay, Sylas, I’ll start burning when I count to three.”
