George and Elara spent a great deal of effort tracking down every person sending out signal broadcasts.

Once all the suspects were locked up securely, Elara hurried over to Gillian’s side.

[It’s moving! The footage finally started playing. I called my wife over right away.]

[Wow, is the feed no longer frozen? I finished an entire meal, and now it’s alive again.]

[This whole situation is really strange. Why did everything go completely still for hours?]

[You common folks wouldn’t understand. That pause means they entered a top-tier simulated arena. Only the most powerful noble clans have access to technology like this.]

[I’ve never even heard of that. Tell me more, buddy.]

[Quit begging, poor guy.]

Hundreds of millions of viewers flooded into the StarNet live stream, desperate to see what would happen next.

The frozen footage finally showed movement once more.

Ruby leaned down and shook Sylas gently. “Dad Sylas, wake up.”

She let out a bright cheer when his clear eyes fluttered open.

Ruby turned toward Merrick. “Dad Merrick, Dad Sylas is awake.”

Merrick shot a glance at Sylas while keeping a tight grip on Norris’ neck. “Sylas, can you stand?”

Sylas tested his body. The neurotoxin that had been plaguing him was completely gone. He still felt the burning pain from the fire treatment on his psionic form. He glanced around instinctively, yet he could not spot Gillian anywhere.

He took a deep breath, pushed himself to his feet, and saluted Merrick in full military form. “Commander, I am fit to move.”

Everyone watching the StarNet broadcast stared in shock as Sylas stood up.

[Didn’t this man look half-dead a minute ago? How is he back on his feet?]

[The 9th Legion soldiers really are made of steel. He was barely clinging to life, and two hours of rest had him ready to fight again?]

[Do you think that Phoenixkin beastman is already dead? He hasn’t moved at all this whole time.]

[Will Black Rick spare him? Even if he lives, Black Rick will kill him eventually.]

Merrick hauled Norris up off the muddy ground; the parasite hung limp and weak.

He held back from snapping the man’s neck right away.

Merrick told Leila to escort Norris over to the central pool.

Then he followed the coordinates Freya had sent him. He spotted the Blue Phoenix fragment without difficulty.

He tapped Norris sharply on the top of his head, irritation plain on his face. “You rotten creep, hiding the fragment here. What a sneaky trick.”

Merrick pulled out the relic and stowed it safely away. The live stream cut to black instantly.

[Oh no, they found the hidden transmitter. We lost the footage. Everyone might as well log off and go to bed.]

[Word says the Department of Justice has reached Wasteland City. I wonder what they will do with Black Rick.]

[What can they do? He said Wasteland City has no law. Maybe we can raise a fund to protect our legion officers?]

Merrick blocked the camera view and quietly signaled Leila and Ruby. He told them to drink as much raw taint from the pool as they could, draining every last bit of energy from the site.

Leila and Ruby nodded and immediately began absorbing the taint.

A group of people walked over from the passageway. Maddox led the procession, followed by a whole host of flower beasts.

The flower beasts called out in neat, cheerful unison the second they spotted Merrick, “Dad Merrick.”

The broadcast was still running. The loud, clear shout stunned all the viewers listening in.

[How many kids does Merrick have anyway?]
