Elara sank into despair. They stood no chance against Ralph. He had subdued Lily with just a single strike.
Gillian took one shaky step toward Ralph, her face etched with distress. She looked every inch the terrified mother begging for her child’s life.
She said, “I will contact Merrick. Please let Lily go first. She cannot breathe.”
Ralph kept his grip tight, his features hard as stone. “Stay right there and do not try anything tricky. You have thirty seconds. If that live feed stays online, she will die-and so will everyone else in this room.”
Gillian opened the comm link to Merrick right away. The call connected in only three seconds.
Merrick saw Gillian’s ashen complexion and instantly grasped what had gone wrong. “Gillian, what happened?”
Gillian projected the call onto the big screen so Ralph’s face came into full view. “Your father is demanding you shut down the broadcast. If you refuse, he will kill all of us. Merrick, what do we do?”
It had been six years since Merrick last faced Ralph. He never imagined their reunion would unfold like this.
Merrick agreed without hesitation and cut the Blue Phoenix live stream immediately, ignoring the confusion sweeping across the Outer Planet.
He stared at his long-hidden father. “Release my wife, my child, and my people, Ralph!”
Ralph still held Lily captive and made his demand firmly while staring at Merrick on screen. “I will let them go on one condition. Three minutes from now, you reopen the stream and tell every viewer that everything you showed was staged, a complete performance. Do that, and they live.”
Merrick fell silent.
Gillian stared at Ralph in disbelief. “How can you make such a cruel demand? You are going to ruin Merrick’s reputation. Why are you doing this?”
The Department of Justice officers turned pale with terror. They were seasoned politicians and could already guess their fate. They regretted not staying frozen in the storage pod; at least then their lives would have been safe.

Ralph ignored every protest and kept his eyes locked on Merrick.
The boy looks just like I did in my younger days.
He stated, “Will you do it or not? You have ten seconds to decide.”

Merrick said, “I will agree to your terms, but I need to know why you have come all the way to the Outer Planet today.”
Pain flickered across Merrick’s face.
Only someone who frames you knows exactly how unjust your conviction is.
Ralph hesitated for a heartbeat and gave no answer.
Merrick waved his off-camera hand and signaled Freya. She understood the order at once. He wanted her to activate the arena and pull everyone inside Gillian’s metal meeting room into the simulation.
Freya said quickly, “Commander, I need Gillian’s cooperation. Warn her in three seconds. Three, two, one, now.”
Merrick said sharply to Gillian, “Freya is waiting for you. Step back first.”
Gillian put on a look of bitter disappointment and began walking toward the door.
Ralph barked sharply, “Stop! No one leaves this room until Merrick
gets
here.”
He lunged forward to grab Gillian. The second his fingers would have touched her, the whole scene shifted. He found himself beneath a sky full of brilliant stars.
The space was completely empty. Not a single other person remained.
Ralph snarled angrily, “Cheap trick. Let me out of here right now.”
No reply echoed through the starry tunnel.
Ralph frowned. “You think a simple simulated arena can trap me?”
With just one glance, Ralph realized this was a simulated arena.
He stood perfectly still, staring at a spot along the passage, searching for weaknesses in the
arena.
Ralph roared, “Merrick, you brat, come out at once. If I break this place open, whoever

The threat landed hard.
A black griffin swooped down and attacked him from behind.
