“All right.” Merrick wore a helpless smile, unable to refuse Gillian when she was this distraught. “Don’t be frightened, Gillian.”

A bright grin spread across his face, as if no trouble could ever defeat him.

“Merrick…” Fear gnawed at Gillian’s heart; she truly dreaded losing him.

Merrick pulled her tightly into his arms. “Very well. We will run away together.”

“I’ll contact Freya right now.” Gillian opened the comm link to Freya, but Merrick held her fast.

His warm murmur brushed against her ear. “Gillian, meeting you has been the happiest moment of my twenty-four years. I am so lucky.”

“Merrick, I…” The second Gillian relaxed her guard, Merrick told Freya to teleport her out of

the arena.

He had always known Ralph never cared for him.

But he loved Gillian and the unborn children she carried-loved them more than he could put into words.

Gillian was strong enough to carry on even if he was no longer by her side.

Watching Gillian’s figure vanish, he stood abruptly and darted over to Maddox.

The smile lingered on his face. At long last, he had found the courage to face his painful family past.

If Maddox harbored this much hatred, how could he not?

Merrick spoke coldly. “Ralph, I have to ask. Your wife passed away, and your own son resents you bitterly. Have you ever felt regret?”

The black griffin fell silent for a heartbeat.

Both his adopted son and his blood son hated him.

Ralph frowned. “Things are far more complicated than you understand. The world is never purely black or white. If you stood in my position, you would learn that many choices are forced upon you

Merrick and Maddox exchanged a glance.

For the first time, the two brothers read each other perfectly.

They would team up and teach this stubborn old man a lesson.

If they could not win, they would still fight.

“Those are nothing but hollow excuses,” Merrick said firmly. “Ralph, let us fight. If we lose, we die. If you lose, you must never set foot inside Wasteland City again.”

Maddox shared exactly the same thought.

The massive black griffin settled onto his haunches and stared coldly at the two young men, dripping with contempt.

He said, “All these years and this is all you have learned? One of you holds a level 3 psionic form, the other only a level 5. You cannot defeat me, even with that female who ran off just

now.”

The boys have never received a proper beating.

If he unleashed his full power, Wasteland City would be reduced to rubble in an instant-but he could not do it.

Maddox froze in shock.

My psionic form is level 5? When have I advanced my psionic form?

When he met Ralph’s gaze, a flicker of panic shot through him.

It should not have been possible. Has Ralph personally trained me, and if so, when?

Ralph never took his eyes off Maddox. He saw the flicker of realization cross Maddox’s clever face, yet his tone stayed sharp with disappointment.

He said, “Maddox, I once thought you were the sharpest of the two. But your choice of mate, and your conduct today… You have let me down terribly.”

Maddox frowned, confusion deepening. “What secret are you hiding from us? Can you not simply speak plainly?”

Only the strong deserve to know the truth. Let me see how much you two have grown.” The giant black griffin lunged straight for the two younger griffins.

Standing head-on against such overwhelming power was nothing short of suicide.

Merrick and Maddox darted nonstop to evade his blows, waiting for a single opening to strike a fatal blow.

Yet chances like this were incredibly hard to come by.

They were completely overwhelmed. Finally, the big griffin pinned them to the ground and bore down on them brutally.

Ralph sneered, “Is this all the progress you have made after all these years? I am truly disappointed.”

Humiliation burned hot.

There was nothing they could do. They simply could not beat Ralph.

Both Merrick and Maddox had their faces crushed against the ground under his boot.

Yet they began to laugh.

“Maddox…”
