Elara burned with the urge to kill Ralph, yet she knew she could not win the fight right now. Escape was their only option.

Lily was sharp-witted and understood Elara’s reasoning, but bitter resentment still welled up inside her.

When Elara bent down to check on Gillian and was not paying attention, Lily let out an angry huff.

She shot out her root tendril and kicked Ralph hard.

His body did not shift an inch.

Lily’s tendril ached sharply from the impact, and she fumed with frustration.

Elara dared not linger. “Lily, we have to leave right now.”

“All right, Aunt Elara.” Lily nodded.

The second she carried Gillian and Lily out of the meeting hall, the beastman soldiers rushed to report new intelligence. “A warship has locked onto airspace above the 9th Legion compound. Their firepower is overwhelming; a single shot could destroy half the base.”

Elara was thankful they had not made a reckless attack. “Come on, Lily. We need to stow Gillian’s physical body somewhere safe.”

She and Lily secretly hid Gillian’s body among tens of thousands of dormant space pods belonging to the Legion.

“Blue, guard Gillian closely.” Elara tapped the Blue Phoenix fragment.

It immediately tampered with the pod’s identification data so Ralph could never locate it, then settled gently on Gillian’s chest.

Lily asked, “Aunt Elara, why can’t we take Mom with us?”

Freya had warned Elara that separating a psionic form too far from its physical body would cause permanent mental damage, so she could not move Gillian’s real body.

Once she heard the explanation, Lily turned to leave without delay.

She said. “We have to hurry, Aunt Elara. Then we’ll come back for Mom.”

Elara nodded and followed her.

She glanced back at the sealed pod as she walked

I will come back to rescue you. If I fail, I will stay and die alongside you.

Maddox had just restrained Merrick and Gillian when a powerful kick sent him flying.

All three tumbled across the ground in a messy heap.

The massive black griffin glared fiercely at Maddox, disappointment heavy in his eyes.

Ralph said, “I thought you were steady and level-headed, Maddox. I never expected you to get mixed up in this foolishness with them.”

Maddox let out a hollow laugh. “Ralph, I got caught. I have no excuses for losing.”

Upon hearing Maddox’s words, the black griffin flew into a towering rage, its voice sharp and icy. “Have you no manners? I raised you for all these years, and you cannot even call me Dad?”

“Dad? What dad?” Maddox rarely smiled, and the low chuckle rumbling in his throat dripped with open scorn.

Merrick lifted his head sharply. He had never seen Maddox lose his composure like this. “Maddox…”

Ralph snapped, “Go ahead and say it. I know you two hold grievances against me. Spit everything out today. I will not have time to listen to your complaints later.”

The provocation snapped Maddox’s self-control. “Ralph, stop and think. Skylar raised Merrick and me all these years. What did you ever do for us?”

He stood up, clutching his aching chest, his gaze turning icy cold. “You vanished for ten whole years. When you finally came back, Skylar was already dead. Where were you then?”

Years of polished restraint shattered completely as his emotions surged.

He looked like a raging beast, the corners of his eyes bloodshot with unbridled fury.

Every word was an accusation thrown straight at Ralph. “Where were you when the parasites devoured Skylar?

Where were you after the parasites nearly killed Merrick?

What right do you have to call yourself our father? Do you even deserve the title?”
