The evening ocean breeze was crisp and soothing. While Carter was busy taking a work call, Emma, having already finalized her tasks for the day, decided to take a leisurely stroll down the quiet road.
"Emma, can we talk?"
Chloe stepped out of the shadows. Emma immediately turned to walk away.
Chloe desperately chased after her, cutting off her path. "I just want to give you a proper apology."
"No need."
Emma genuinely didn't care for an apology. Only victims needed an apology, and she certainly wasn't the victim.
Chloe clenched her fists. "I invited everyone from the beach to the bar. I'm going to publically admit my mistakes in front of all of them. I know I crossed the line today, so please, just give me the chance to make it right."
Emma narrowed her eyes, studying her carefully. Crossing her arms, she replied, "There's no need. I don't care about humiliating you in public. As far as I'm concerned, the matter is settled."
Chloe clearly hadn't anticipated that response. As she stood there stunned, Emma simply walked past her.
Frowning, Chloe quickly yelled, "Are you too scared to go? Do you think I'm going to try something?"
Emma smirked, her tone flat. "Yes."
"You!" Chloe couldn't believe she had admitted it so bluntly.
But knowing the plan hinged entirely on Emma showing up, she started to panic.
Just as Chloe was running out of ideas, another figure emerged from the darkness.
"You don't have to go, but Scarlett is already there."
Gillian stormed over, her voice dripping with malice.
"I'll be perfectly honest with you. Tonight is a trap set specifically for you. If you don't show up, then whatever happens will fall entirely on Scarlett's shoulders."
Emma frowned, debating whether she should call Carter.
Reading her expression, Gillian added, "You can't hide forever, Emma. Make your choice."
Emma understood the threat perfectly. She turned back to Chloe.
A flicker of understanding passed through Emma's eyes. Before she could respond, Gillian casually crossed her legs and announced, "Since Emma isn't drinking, Tiffany, you can have those."
She pointed a manicured finger toward a row of expensive liquor bottles lined up on the table.
The color vanished from Tiffany's face. She was still on heavy medication for her leg and absolutely could not drink alcohol.
But since tonight's entire setup was aimed at Emma, she bit her lip, preparing to sacrifice herself.
Before the glass could reach her lips, Emma snatched her wrist.
"How completely unnecessary."
Emma took the glass from Tiffany's trembling hand. Casting a look of pure contempt at Gillian and Chloe, she stood up, downed the spiked liquor in one fluid motion, and turned toward the exit.
She slammed the empty glass onto the table. As she passed Gillian, she paused.
"Stop hanging around Dominic. His stupidity is contagious."
