Lily asked, “What do we do now? Are we just going to stay trapped down here?”
Merrick replied, “We’re waiting for someone, Lily.”

He frowned and stared at the thick, black taint liquid ahead. He made no move to climb out of the hole just yet.
Lily pressed again, confused, “Waiting for who?”
“We’re waiting for everyone who wants us dead.” Gillian stroked the top of Lily’s head gently. “Go tell all the flower beasts right now. None of them can show power above level 8. Every single one needs to head back to their dens and stand by for orders.”
Lily worried and pressed further, “Will you and Dad stay down here the whole time?”
Gillian shook her head. “We’ll come find you once we catch the people we’re waiting for:”
Lily nodded quickly. “Alright.”
She burrowed back up through the underground tunnel, leaving a small air vent open for Gillian and Merrick.
The underground burrow was pitch black and deathly quiet. Merrick pulled Gillian tight into his arms.
Merrick lowered his voice and asked softly, “Gillian, are you scared?”
Gillian answered, “I’m only afraid our enemies won’t show up at all.”
She typed, “Is everything Maddox said the truth, actually?”
I need to ask Merrick what he plans to do about Maddox after this is over.
Merrick stared blankly into the darkness. He replied, “I don’t know.”
Gillian pressed her left palm over Merrick’s wounds. Faint white light seeped out and slowly mended his injured flesh.
It was the only source of light deep inside this black cave.
A patch of rotted skin still lingered on Merrick’s cheek, yet he showed no sign of pain. He hung his head, sorting out his tangled feelings about Maddox.

He tapped harshly against the screen of his wrist terminal, his brows knotted tight with frustration.
Gillian expected him to give a plain yes or no on forgiving Maddox. Instead, she was watching Merrick-the man everyone in Wasteland City fears-break down and show his weakest side.
Merrick typed, “When I was the young heir of Griffinkin, training was brutal. Whenever I wanted to quit, I gritted my teeth and told myself: if Maddox could push through, why couldn’t I? Maddox was perfect at everything. Everyone thought he was a born genius. Deep down, I felt inferior. I even went to talk to Fath…”
Merrick’s fingers jerked sharply, erasing the unfinished sentence. He smoothed out his expression and kept typing as if nothing had happened.
Gillian felt her throat tighten when she saw the cut-off word “father”.
Merrick has carried so much pain all these years.
Merrick typed, “I asked Ralph why he picked me instead of Maddox, even though Maddox was such an outstanding griffin member. He stared at me coldly and said I was useless, beyond saving. Before Mom passed away, Maddox was the big brother I looked up to most. I hated him for 14 years. Now I’ve learned Ralph had a hand in my mother’s death. I finally feel calm. I will make everyone who harmed my mother pay. And I will repay every debt I owe Maddox, too.”
Merrick looked just like a hurting child, struggling to get the words out as raw emotion welled up inside him.
He always thought Maddox had stood by and let his mother die without lifting a finger. He never guessed his own father was mixed up in the plot.
Gillian pulled Merrick’s arm over her shoulder, then leaned in and rested her head on his chest, offering him silent comfort.
Merrick felt her warm body pressed against him, and his hard gaze softened at once,
He typed, “Watch your stomach carefully. I’m sorry you have to stick this out down here with me. If no enemies turn up soon, we’ll head straight out and raid their hideout ourselves.”
Gillian and Merrick stared silently at the messages on the wrist terminal’s screen.
Neither of them brought up this heavy topic again while they waited.
No matter whether that story was true or not, one fact was certain. Fourteen years ago, swarms of these parasites had already invaded Capital Planet.

All at once, both of them held their breath and listened closely to strange noises echoing nearby.
The inky black tainted soil began to shake. It sounded like dozens of tiny claws scraping and digging through dirt.
