He had nearly drained Merrick dry all those years ago. He could never get enough of Merrick’s face, and he had come today to take over Merrick’s body for good.
Thatcher had grown far too arrogant on Capital Planet. So many clansmen had died, yet he never showed a trace of sorrow. Instead, he kept blaming everyone else for failing him.
Eliot knew the earlier clansmen had only gained a foothold on Capital Planet thanks to the ore buried deep beneath Wasteland City.
He valued the clansmen who had failed to complete their evolution. But these mineral veins were drying up fast.
The clans staying on Capital Planet got fewer and fewer benefits. They forgot where they came from and started acting like they were better than the rest.
Eliot knew he could no longer rely on Thatcher.
Even if this was a trap, he still had to take the risk.
When Eliot found the cave and spotted Merrick lying motionless on the ground, he almost burst out laughing.
Years of caution held him back. He ordered the scaled parasite beside him to sink its teeth into Merrick’s flesh.
A large chunk of flesh got torn clean off. The thick smell of blood filled the whole cave, yet the man on the ground did not stir an inch.
Now he was certain Merrick was truly unconscious. Eliot waved the scaled parasite closer and spoke softly, “You can’t eat him yet. Once I take Merrick’s shape, you can pick any beastman from the 9th Legion you want.”
No one could tell if the scaled parasite understood him. It swallowed the piece of meat and lingered for a moment before slinking away.
Eliot recorded a short video of the unconscious Merrick and sent it to Thatcher.
He even gave orders in a sharp, commanding tone.
“I’ll finish him off right away. Move your men in and seize this area after I step out. I’ll make all the 9th Legion beastmen stay put and wait.”

Eliot wasted no more time. He stared down at the body waiting for him and quickly stripped off his clothes and his wrist terminal.
The skin that perfectly matched Merrick’s features began cracking all over.
A thick blood-red membrane dropped heavily onto the dirt. It wrapped Merrick tight, just like foaming red sealant.
The scaled parasite backed out of the cave and left them alone.
Once all noise faded away, Gillian summoned a small golden flame at her fingertips.
She brushed dirt off her body and crawled forward, moving just like a lost scaled parasite.
Her jaw tightened when she saw Merrick wrapped tightly inside the bloody film. She touched the golden flame to the membrane.
The golden fire burned fiercely. Under Gillian’s control, the whole layer turned to ash in just seconds.
Gillian asked anxiously, “Merrick, are you alright?”
Merrick looked pretty banged up.
The narrow tunnel left no room to move around. Gillian helped him sit up and lean against her chest.
Merrick said, “I’m fine, Gillian. It’s just a tiny bite from the bug. Those tainted beasts hurt far worse-this only stings like an ant bite.”
To Merrick, this shallow cut barely counted as an injury.
He had survived far worse wounds before.
But when he saw the tears welling up in Gillian’s eyes, he shifted into a playful tone. “Honey, did I pull off the fake death perfectly? We hooked our target right into our trap.”
Gillian said nothing.
Her heart ached for him.
She kept pouring her healing psionic power over the bite on his leg. Merrick had sacrificed plenty to set this trap.

The enemy never let their guard slip, and they had no other way to catch them red-handed.
The discarded wrist terminal and clothes glinted brightly under Gillian’s pale white light.
Merrick caught sight of the white metal plug sticking out of the device. He stretched out his long arm and snatched it up fast.
