Gillian listened to Merrick’s sweet praise. She knew she had cheered him right back up.
Merrick kept complimenting Gillian while tapping the screen of the wrist terminal. The device failed to power up no matter what he did.
This was the first time he had ever seen a parasite carrying one of these terminals.
His gut told him this man, who shared his face, held the answers to all their unanswered questions.
Gillian gripped Merrick’s wrist and studied the machine closely, her tone laced with disappointment. “Does this S-class wrist terminal also have a built-in genetic lock?”
Merrick took the trace of blood left on Gillian’s fingertips and dabbed it onto the terminal’s surface.
The screen lit up the very next second.
It actually unlocked.
Still, the Cryolotus Wrist Terminal never fully activated. The parasites did not have Elara’s blood. They probably never got the chance to collect it-they had killed those crimson hides. before they could finish feeding.
Gillian quickly sent Elara a message. She typed, “Everything is going smoothly. We have obtained one parasite’s identity successfully.”
Elara stared helplessly at the new message popping up on her wrist terminal. She was too trapped to type a reply.
After Maddox slung her over his shoulder, he tied her wrists tight. He climbed into a stolen small aircraft and headed straight for Wasteland City.
Elara frowned and spoke cautiously, “Master, are you running away?”
Maddox’s voice turned cold and unyielding again. “Elara, if I were you, I would keep my mouth shut right now.”
Elara knew that he would take it out on her to make up for everything he’d lost.
A second message flashed across the screen, and Elara’s eyes lit up.

She shot a meaningful glance toward the man piloting the craft beside her.
Elara urged, “Gillian just messaged me. Untie my hands so I can write back to her.”
Maddox never even glanced her way. “Don’t even think about tipping her off.”

Elara reasoned quickly, “Didn’t you clear up the misunderstanding with Commander Cole? Why don’t you wipe out every last crimson hide right now and avenge Skylar?”
Maddox reached out and pinched her chin, staring at her chattering lips. “I’ve kept you by my side all these years, and only now do I see how deeply you hid your true self. Was that loyal, obedient Ice Shadow all just an act?”
He leaned in and kissed her hard.
Elara struggled against his rough hold at first. Once his temper faded, his touch turned tender, just like that night.
Sometime in the middle of it all, he untied her hands. She wrapped her arms around his neck and sat face-to-face on his lap.
Both of them were breathing heavily.
Elara brushed her slender fingers lightly over his collarbone. She trailed her touch down his shoulders, finally stopping at his waist.
Watching desire slowly cloud his eyes because of her movements, a mocking smile tugged at her cold face. “Are you punishing me-or punishing yourself?”
Maddox’s voice turned low and dangerous. “You’d better hope you can take the payback once we get back. The harder you fight now, the louder you’ll beg later.”
Elara felt no fear at all. She leaned forward and nipped his lower lip. At just the right moment, she triggered the cryolotus sealed inside his primal core.
Maddox let out a low groan. His cyan griffin stirred inside Elara. Elara pressed tightly against his chest and relaxed completely.
Elara whispered, “We found the Cryolotus Wrist Terminal. Gillian has it now, and she wants me to come pick it up. Are you really going to pass this chance up?”
Maddox fought down the heat rising in his body and brought the aircraft to an abrupt stop.
He grabbed her waist hard, squeezing so tightly he nearly crushed her bones. “I want it. Of course I want it.”

He wanted everything.

Elara curled her arms around his neck and breathed against his ear.
She offered, “Can we make a deal, Maddox?
