“No one can deny it. Ms. Sterling loves Commander Cole so deeply that she’d throw away her own life without hesitation.”
Dominic raised his voice and cut off the chatter. “Quit talking. Ms. Sterling might have crawled into one of the caves. Search every corner carefully.”
The beastmen combing the pit all shook their heads with sorrow.
She had jumped into the taint pool just to stay with Merrick. That kind of bravery meant her love was genuine.
Even Merrick barely survived after diving in. The odds were stacked heavily against her.
Dawn broke at last.
The search teams found no trace of Gillian anywhere around the taint pool. All they recovered were pieces of white metal survival gear.
The fabric bore patterns matching cleric robes. Everyone took this as proof that she was dead.
The exhausted search parties climbed out of the pit after a full night of hunting.
Merrick had rested through the night. He stood pale-faced inside his room, staring out the window, lost in thought.
A beastman soldier stepped inside and delivered the report carefully. “Commander, we found no sign of Ms. Sterling. We fear the worst. Please take care of yourself.”
Merrick pushed past everyone trying to hold him back and bolted outside.
He stood motionless beside the pit for a long while before barking out orders. “Hunt Maddox down. Every last one of you moves out. I want him trapped down in this pit tonight to pay with his life for Ms. Sterling.”
The ranks of beastmen stood tall and shouted in unison, “Yes, Commander.”
Number Five and Number Six immediately bowed to beg for forgiveness.
Number Five pleaded, “Commander, we held back because we feared Maddox would hurt Elara. We did not dare stop him from taking her away.”
Number Six added, “We failed you. Punish us however you see fit.”

Merrick pinned the two men down with a frigid stare. He waited until they could no longer bear the pressure before speaking slowly, “This mistake costs you your lives-but I will spare you. If you fail to bring him back alive, you two will jump into the taint pool and experience that poison firsthand.”
Number Five and Number Six answered, “Yes, Commander.”
Led by the Sovereign Guard, warships shot upward from the taint pool one after another, cutting sharp lines across the sky.
Churning clouds of taint billowed up, staining the whole sky pitch-black.
Merrick had suffered this terrible humiliation. They would not stop until they captured Maddox.
It was not only Gillian who was lost; Maddox had also taken Elara hostage.
Countless beastmen owed Elara their lives from her past medical aid. They could not stand by and watch her become a prisoner.
Live footage of the whole scene streamed straight to Thatcher’s terminal.
The timeline was all wrong. They had agreed to launch their attack at sundown the previous day.
But Eliot had not emerged all night. He only sent a short message saying plans had shifted. Thatcher could no longer tell if the figure on screen was truly Eliot or the real Merrick.
He stared quietly at the screen, growing uneasy.
Everything had unfolded far too smoothly. The whole thing felt like an illusion.
He typed, “You really do a great job of pretending to be Merrick.”
This mission was too critical. A single misstep would ruin everything. He had to be extra
cautious.
After sending the message, Thatcher kept his eyes glued to the screen and waited for Eliot’s reply.
Moments later, the man wearing Merrick’s form seemed to feel the wrist terminal vibrate. He glanced down and opened the incoming message.
His expression stayed completely blank, as if he never knew how to show emotion at all.

It looked as though he had expected Thatcher’s message all along.
