Merrick wasted no time. He replied perfectly in Eliot’s tone, “Of course I won’t hold onto it. Once the owner of the metal block shows up, our big feast begins. We will make up for every scaled parasite we lost in this raid. We can sort out all other details when we meet face to face.”
Thatcher was fully satisfied.
Eliot is being foolish. Only a few scaled parasites died. Without flower beasts to fix their genetic flaws, those creatures are barely even our kin. I cannot fathom why he cares so deeply.
Still, as long as he stays out of my way, I have no complaints.
Thatcher typed, “I’ll be waiting eagerly for your good news.”.
Every word from Thatcher reeked of pure joy.
Merrick couldn’t wait to see if he was still grinning when they lured him out to meet his end.
Now that Thatcher had calmed down, Merrick immediately messaged Gillian, “Gillian, everything is going smoothly on my end. How is your side progressing?”
He also sent Eliot and Thatcher’s whole plot in coded text to the Sovereign Guard’s StarChat group chat.
Every colonel in the group glanced over the message and understood the plan clearly.
They erased the chat history right away and turned to the beastmen under their command. “We must bring back Elara today. None of us is going home until we succeed.”
The soldiers shouted in unison, “Got it.”
Now that the performance had started, every player needed to stay in character to pull off a flawless show.
The night before, right after he got hold of Eliot’s wrist terminal, Merrick had copied all its stored data and sent it to Gillian and the others.
By this point, they knew the scaled parasites’ patrol routes so well they could navigate around them blindfolded.

The setup could not have been more perfect.
Half a day later, they slipped silently right into the heart of the scaled parasite nest.

Gillian and her group lay hidden deep in pitch-black underground tunnels, waiting for the perfect opening to strike.
Suddenly, the screen on Gillian’s wrist terminal lit up with Merrick’s message.
Merrick typed, “Night is falling. The rats are coming out to steal grain.”
Gillian’s eyes softened into a warm smile. “Elara, Merrick has fully fooled them. Once dusk arrives, we can draw our enemies out of hiding.”
Elara leaned back inside a lily of the valley and spoke gently, genuine admiration shining in her eyes, “Commander Cole really is as capable as everyone says.”
Maddox, who had sat quietly beside her, twisting a warding token, lifted his head at those words.
He studied Elara carefully. “You’re acting differently today.”
Elara blinked in confusion. “What do you mean?”
Why is he picking a fight out of nowhere?
Maddox grumbled, “I’ve never once heard you hand out compliments like this.”
Even during their most heated night together, she never said a single nice word to him.
Afterward, she rolled over and fell asleep without a second glance, leaving him to clean mess alone.

The conversation died on the spot.
Is he just looking for a reason to pick a fight?
Elara shot him an annoyed look. “Do you think playing nice with our enemy is easy? He’s extremely powerful, so he deserves some praise.”
I agreed to all his harsh terms just to keep Gillian’s plan on track. I’ll speak my mind whenever I want. He has no right to judge me.
“Whatever you want.” Maddox clenched the glowing crystal warding token tight in his palm.

His metal blade had sliced through the token’s cord earlier, and he had yet to find a replacement.
