A cold chill rolled off Elara’s body. The lily of the valley suddenly shrank its petals. The people hiding inside tumbled over from the sudden shift.

Leila Sterling said with embarrassment, “Mom, I didn’t mean to do that. That cold energy made me shiver.”

Gillian was grabbed firmly by Ruby and Lily, so she did not roll out of the bloom. Elara, however, fell straight into a strong pair of arms wrapped tight around her waist.

Gillian said gently, “It’s alright, Leila. None of us got hurt.”

The small flower bud fell completely silent. The two were locked in an awkward, intimate position. Gillian silently raised her hands and covered Ruby and Lily’s eyes.

Lily’s vision went dark, and she wrinkled her nose in confusion. “Mom, why are you covering my eyes?”

Ruby giggled loudly. “Don’t you get it? Aunt Elara and Uncle Maddox are about to kiss.”

Gillian froze completely.

Lily nodded slowly in understanding. “I see.”

Elara’s face burned bright red for the first time. She quickly shifted her weight and slid out of Maddox’s lap. She sat down beside Ruby and clamped a hand over the little girl’s mouth. She whispered urgently, “Ruby, keep quiet and listen closely. The parasites are getting ready to

move out.”

Maddox sat frozen, stunned after the warm, soft body slipped out of his embrace.

It had been nothing but an automatic reflex. Even if she had fallen, she would not have hit the ground hard. Why had he reached out to catch her?

He had never felt such confusing emotions before. After thinking it over and finding no answer, he blamed the strange feeling on the core bond between them.

“Really?” Ruby and Elara instantly straightened their expressions.

They stretched thin root tendrils outward. Seconds later, grins spread across both of their faces; the parasites were indeed on the move.

Lily turned toward Gillian and reported the enemy’s movement. “Mom, a group of bugs is

Gillian smiled, “The show at the taint pool is officially starting.”

Adrian stepped off the aircraft and brought the pale-faced Elara straight to Merrick’s side. “Commander, I’ve brought Elara back.

“I lost track of Maddox. He dumped Elara out in the wilderness. If the area hadn’t been so isolated, the tainted beasts would have gotten to her.”

Merrick wore a solemn expression. He stepped past Adrian and walked over to Elara.

When he saw she only looked worn out and had no physical injuries, his cold expression softened slightly.

Merrick asked, “Captain Sterling, do you know where Maddox ran off to?”

Elara was filled with self-blame. She had let Maddox escape and dragged so many people out searching for her. Her voice shook with frustration as she dropped down onto one knee.

She said, “Commander, I failed my mission. He took me hostage and left me stranded in the wild. His aircraft flew away at top speed, and I have no clue where he went.”

Elara had been exposed to the burning, toxic wasteland all day, so her throat was raw and hoarse.

Humiliation from being held captive by Maddox weighed heavily on her. She hung her head, looking utterly defeated.

She stared at the dried-up pit, sadness welling up in her eyes. “Commander, did we fail to save my sister?”

Merrick sighed deeply, “I’m sorry for your loss. I will hunt Maddox down no matter what it takes.”

Elara buried her face in her hands and broke into loud sobs. “How could everything go so wrong…”

Merrick’s wrist terminal vibrated with an incoming message. He wasted no more time and reached down to help Elara stand.

Merrick said, “Captain Sterling, get to your feet.”

“Commander, no need. I can manage on my own.” Elara pulled away from his offered hand and stood up on her own. She smoothly drew her hands back to her sides.

Merrick’s tone turned calm and reassuring. “Step aside for now. I need to speak with you later in private.”
