Elara stepped inside only after hearing this explanation.

She frowned. “Commander, how bad are your injuries? Anyone who goes into that taint pool usually gets eaten down to the bone.”

Her voice softened as she thought about Gillian, and she muttered to herself, “Poor Gillian— only a few fragments of her body were left behind.”

Adrian had already told her the whole story of how they found Merrick.

Merrick sighed, “Gillian just had terrible luck. She failed to find the hidden cave.”

He sat stiffly on the metal sofa. His tone was cold and distant, making Elara feel like she was talking to a total stranger.

Elara said sharply, “Commander, you don’t sound upset at all.”

Merrick fell silent. He uncrossed his long legs and steered the conversation away from Gillian’s fate. Merrick waved her closer. “Come here and check my wounds first.”

Elara froze on the spot, her face turning pale.

She questioned, “If you fell into the taint pool, your face should carry at least some burn scars. How come there isn’t a single mark on you?”

Merrick stared deep into her eyes, his gaze sharp as if he was watching something right behind her.

He replied, “I used healing alloy. That’s why there’s no scarring.”

A cold chill washed over Elara’s back. She murmured, “Oh, I see.” Then she hurried to sit down beside him.

Once Elara slumped unconscious on the sofa, an older male stepped out from the bathroom behind the door.

Thatcher frowned with obvious impatience. “This female is far too sharp-witted.”

I was ready to step in myself if Eliot kept dragging his feet.

Merrick nodded shortly.

He pricked Elara’s finger to draw a drop of blood and held it over the metal block.

Thatcher quickly stopped him. “Eliot, let me handle the metal block. It’s a defective leftover from the old lab, and we have to be extra careful.”

Eliot held the blood suspended above the surface and shrugged, looking completely uninterested in the metal block. “I’ll hand over the metal block, but I keep Blue Phoenix. I need something to hold onto as insurance.”

This left Thatcher feeling a bit uncertain.

Eliot continued, “If you won’t agree, I’ll go ahead and do it myself. I’m the one who brought Elara back, so I should be the one to unlock this block. I’m curious to see what old research files are still stored inside.”

Thatcher’s expression darkened with unease.

Eliot already held the research notes on flower beast evolution. If he got his hands on more lab records, he would have enough leverage to cut Thatcher out entirely.
