Thatcher understood right away.

Eliot is forcing me to make my choice.

He said quickly, “Of course I want to see it. I’m counting on us to level up together so we can move on to the Central World soon.”

Thatcher leaned down and grabbed hold of the metal block. Merrick kept his fingertip pressed against the artifact and waited until Thatcher handed over Blue Phoenix.

Only then did Merrick pull his hand away. “Pleasant cooperation.”

Thatcher jammed the metal block into his wrist terminal without delay. A white lotus flower bloomed open at once, layer upon layer of pure white petals unfolding like the cleanest color in existence.

“It’s done. Eliot, I knew I could count on you.” Thatcher’s voice shook with excitement. He kept stroking the blooming petals of the cryolotus.

At the thought of the data he was about to unlock, a sharp flash of greed lit up his dull, clouded

eyes.

Thatcher muttered to himself, “This metal block is the Cryolotus Wrist Terminal? I heard our people built a huge lab right at the source of the taint twenty years ago. They ran hundreds of trials, and every single one failed. I never guessed one prototype managed to slip away.”

“A loose end always gets hunted down eventually.”

Thatcher’s whole body went rigid.

That voice-it is Elara. She has never passed out after all.

Panic surged through him, and he spun around to run.

The world suddenly swirled and blurred in front of his eyes.

When he opened his eyes again, he stood on pitch-black soil.

Bones littered the ground, mixed with the corpses of countless scaled parasites. A sick stench hung thick in the air.

Heavy fog rolled everywhere, blocking any view of the distance.

Thatcher spun around in terror, growing more horrified by the second. “Where am I? Eliot, show yourself!”

He yelled into the empty mist and realized he had been completely tricked.

Thatcher snarled, “Eliot, you’re playing far too dirty. Is this what you call good faith cooperation?”

Why would Eliot double-cross me? Without my help, Eliot will never find a way through to Capital

Planet.

Thatcher was tangled in wild, anxious thoughts when a massive griffin appeared straight ahead.

The beast was pure black from head to claw, radiating overwhelming power. Its eyes locked onto Thatcher like a predator from the underworld, ready to strike.

Thatcher’s heart hammered in his chest. It finally sank in: Eliot had made a deal with Merrick.

Thatcher roared, “Get out of here right now, Eliot! You betrayed our clan to side with Merrick. No outsider can ever be trusted. Do you think you’ll survive this? Once they kill me, you’ll be next!”

He had no intention of waiting for death. He shouted frantically, trying to turn them against each other and buy himself time to escape.

The ground shook the very next second. A giant peony burst up through the dirt, and its thick root tendrils lashed straight toward Thatcher.

Thatcher twisted nimbly and dodged the blow. That was when he noticed he was trapped inside his psionic form.

Damn it!

More and more flowers sprouted from underground, closing in on him. Thatcher turned and ran for his life. He held zero combat advantage in this space.

Mid-flight, a thorny blood rose snared his ankles and coiled upward.

One flower beast alone would not have broken his nerve, but two, then three-hundreds of them swarmed in. Their spiky roots wrapped tightly and bound him completely immobile.

The black griffin walked over and stopped in front of him.

Thatcher’s physical body belonged to the Phoenixkin, but his psionic form still looked like a

parasite. Its bloody skin and squashed facial features made for a grotesque sight.

Thatcher bellowed, “Call Eliot out here. I want to see him even if I die.”
