Gillian lifted her head and frowned toward the center of the pool. Quite a few unopened blossoms floated a short distance from the bank, in dozens of different varieties.
It looked as if every flower she knew-and many she did not-had been gathered right here.
Gillian muttered, “Who put all these blooms in a pool of raw taint?”
She could hardly believe such a magical spot existed deep underground.
Maddox’s sharp eyes caught the secret right away. “The Central World Marker is almost certainly at the bottom of this pool.”
He went on, “These are not real flowers. They look like carvings chiseled from the rare ore found in this cavern.”
Maddox could go no further on his own and turned his gaze toward Gillian.
He still wondered how she and Merrick had both fallen into the taint pool and escaped without a single burn.
Gillian said firmly, “We have to check what lies beneath the water.”
She was about to dive down herself when a thin root tendril blocked her path.
The tendril was still damp, as if it had just come up from the pool bottom.
Lily said, “Mom, the taint pool is not deep. Let me take a look. I don’t sense anything dangerous down there.”
Her roots had already touched the bottom; the water only reached waist height for an adult.
She had felt around and found no hidden tunnels. Now she knew what to expect.
Gillian refused to take unnecessary risks. “Be careful. Come straight back up if anything feels wrong.”
Lily answered, “Wait right here for me, Mom.”
With those words, her small body plunged straight into the black taint pool.
She surfaced a moment later, her white form standing out sharply against the dark pool.

Gillian could not bear to let Lily explore alone. She held out her hand. Lily understood Gillian wanted to keep physical contact.
She had swum several body lengths away, so she grew one thin white tendril, stretched it out fast, and laid it into Gillian’s open palm.
Gillian said softly, “Lily, stay safe. I’ll hold onto your root and come with you, alright?”
Lily chirped, “Sure thing, Mom.”
If Mom keeps channeling her psionic power to protect me, I’ll get the extra purge. That makes the job well worth doing.
She wasted no more time and darted farther toward the center of the pool.
Gillian pressed both palms against the pool’s edge. A stream of white psionic power followed Lily down into the water and wrapped tightly around her root tendril.
Healing energy clashed with the taint, sending up thin wispy gray smoke.
Before the smoke could drift away, Lily’s roots sucked every last bit of it dry.
Lily felt absolutely delighted. She got healing power just for working, and her energy surged.
When she reached the middle of the pool, she leaned close and whispered into the wrist terminal hidden among the petals.
Lily said, “Mom, that grumpy Uncle Maddox was right. These are only stone carvings, and they’re not pretty at all.”
Maddox frowned.
When did I ever look grumpy?
Elara nearly burst out laughing.
Keep talking, Lily. Don’t hold back.
Gillian’s cheeks burned with embarrassment.
Don’t tease him straight to his face, sweetie.
She quickly changed the subject. “Lily, check under these carved flowers. Look for anything unusual.”

Gillian told Lily to zoom the camera in. Lily searched and filmed for a long time without spotting anything special.
Lily reported, “Beneath all these flower carvings lies a solid slab of white jade stone.
“There’s nothing else in the pool except these lifeless carvings. Oh, and someone pried several blossoms off the stone. The empty holes stick out and make it look even uglier.”
Lily kept shifting her position, and the footage shook violently. The dense cluster of carved blooms blurred the screen for Gillian and the others watching on land.
Elara gripped Gillian’s wrist tightly, yet the image still kept shaking.
She called out, “Lily, slow down. Is the pool really empty?”
Lily huffed, “Mom, you’d better come see for yourselves.”
If I can’t find it, there’s nothing there.
She never pushed herself too hard. She wove eight root tendrils together to make a floating bridge and gestured for the group to cross over.
