Maddox ran a scan with his wrist terminal. The database listed over a thousand kinds of carved flowers, far more than what appeared on the slab. They could no longer tell which blossom was missing.
Gillian turned toward Lily. “Does our Flora Squad have this flower? Take a careful look, Lily,”
Lily lowered her head and racked her brains, trying to figure out which carving was gone.
Just then, a message popped up on Gillian’s terminal. Merrick typed, “Gillian, how is your search going?”
Gillian checked the timestamp. The message had been sent five minutes earlier. The signal down here was unstable and caused delays.
She typed back, “Everything is going smoothly, Merrick. Check Thatcher and Eliot’s wrist terminals for stone flower carvings.”
Five minutes ticked by. Elara and the others still found no new clues on the white stone slab. Lily had only woven the root bridge to make them come check for themselves because she hit a dead end.
Gillian had a sudden thought. “Elara, do you think Thatcher used this passage to reach the Outer Planet ahead of schedule?”
Elara nodded. “It’s entirely possible. He could have sent a duplicate of Blue Phoenix with a group traveling at normal speed from Capital Planet to the Outer Planet to throw us off track. Then he would strike before we could react.”
She had never stopped dwelling on her misjudgment of Thatcher’s arrival time.
Still, she felt immense satisfaction now that Thatcher had fallen into the 9th Legion’s trap. Those who manipulate other people’s fates would always end up being trapped themselves.
Maddox stared at the pool with a deep frown, yet he found nothing out of the ordinary.
Nearly seven more minutes passed before Merrick’s reply finally came through.
Merrick typed, “I found two carvings-both pear blossom stones.”
Pear blossom?
Gillian froze for a split second. Her mind immediately pictured the white pear trees growing at

Elara noticed her blank expression and asked, “Gillian, what did Commander Cole send you?”
Gillian first typed a quick reply to Merrick, then turned back to Elara. “It’s just a strange coincidence. Merrick found two pear blossom stone carvings on Thatcher and Eliot’s terminals.”
“Pear blossom stone?” Elara blinked in surprise.
No wonder Gillian was surprised.
She quickly composed her features again. “It may only be a coincidence.”
Maddox pointed at the empty sockets on the slab. “Four blossoms are missing here. That means more than two people have used this boundary passage.”
The plot was growing more and more complicated.
Gillian crouched down and ran her fingers over the empty holes. She tried prying off other stone flowers, but the carvings did not shift at all.
Elara pointed toward the pear blossom carving. “I just noticed something. Every other flower here is unique. Only the pear blossom appears more than once.”
Gillian reached out toward the vividly carved pear blossom.
Her fingers tugged gently, and the blossom stone trembled on the slab. A section of its root pulled free from the stone.
The texture was nothing like hard rock. The exposed stem felt soft and living beneath her fingertips. It did not sound like stone scraping against stone.
Gillian gasped, her eyes fixed tightly on the pale white stem in her hand, “Lily, Elara-this feels like a living root.”
Elara crouched down to examine it closely.
Gillian loosened her grip a little so Elara could get a better view.
The blossom stone did not snap back into place. The long exposed stem bounced elastically, swaying as if caught by a light wind.
Lily poked her head over to take a look. One glance was enough for her to be certain.

She announced firmly, “It’s alive. This root is living plant matter.”
Gillian’s skin crawled. “Are you absolutely sure, Lily?”
Lily insisted, “Yeah. I’m sure, Mom.”
Flower beasts could spot details no one else could. This was a genuine living white blossom, not just a stone carving.
